A portal frame lends itself to a building that requires a large open span and when designed using timber it creates an aesthetically pleasing space to be in. There are many reasons why timber should be the 1st option when considering a portal frame design.

  • Aesthetics.
  • Structural efficiency and economy.
  • Simplicity in fabrication and erection.
  • Better resistance to fire and corrosive environments when compared to steel.
  • Suitability for site fabrication and timber is one of the only renewable resources in the building industry.
  • Timber absorbs noise/sound, whereas noise/sound bounces off steel and concrete.

Portal frames provide an elegant solution for buildings that require large open spans with no internal columns.

There are many reasons you might want to use a portal frame. It may be that you require a large-span shed or a commercial warehouse, residential shed, carport, or a home that is designed to look more industrial but uses timber over steel.

Portal frames will consist of columns, rafters, and purlins and when connected forms the skeletal structure that provides lateral stability to form the wide-open space for whatever use is required.

The portal frames achieve their structural integrity through ridged connections between the column and rafter at the knee, and then in between the rafter members at the ridge or apex. These joints are generally finished off using gussets made from heavy-duty plywood which is a highly effective and simple connection that can be achieved on-site. A steel gusset with bolt connectors can also be used in lieu of plywood.

Glue laminated timber is considered as strong as any other solid timber and a fantastic option when choosing timber in a portal frame for its large sectional sizes and spanning capabilities.

LVL is another product that can be used in portal frames also due to it being available in larger sizes.

With the right engineering advice and support timber portals can be constructed either partially or completely on the ground and erected into place using cranes for a safe and cost-efficient building process.
